ABOUT TIM SUPPLE
Tim Supple has directed and adapted theatre throughout the UK and in Europe, India, North and South America, North Africa and West Asia. He has worked regularly at the National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company in the UK and was Artistic Director of the Young Vic from 1993 to 2000. For his company Dash Arts he has directed A Midsummer Nights Dream with artists from all over India, commissioned by Britsh Council, which toured extensively across India and in UK, Europe, Australia and North America between 2006 and 2008. In 2011 his six hour adaptation of On Thousand and One Nights with artists from across the Arabic-speaking world was the hit of Edinburgh International Festival and he is now developing major theatre works in India, Iran and the post-Soviet States.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
The workshop aims to investigate all aspects of the demands of Shakespeare’s text on the actor. It brings awareness of the three major aspects of acting King Lear: text, creation of character and physical realisation.
Each day will begin with the practice of Kalaripayattu, the Kerala form of Martial Art; followed by exploration to develop a physical language and bring awareness of the realities of hierarchy, ritual, family, war, sexuality and violence that are essential to King Lear.
Vocal and text exercises will be conducted in the afternoon which will explore the speech, thought, actions and emotional realities of Shakespear’s characters. Each day will culminate in the realisation of scenes.
The workshop is designed to welcome all levels knowledge of English. So excellence in the language is NOT a requirement. The workshop is open to all; however, all applications will be screened by Mr. Supple before finalising the list of participants.
