Successful third edition of the African Creative Economy Conference 2013
From 6th to 9th October, delegates from fifty different countries congregated at Cape Town’s City Hall for an invigorating four days of analysis, performances, networking and debate at the 2013 edition of the African Creative Economy Conference. (read more)
Arterial Network elects new Stirring Committee
On Thursday the 10th of October, Arterial Network hosted its 4th biennial conference, where members voted on amendments to its Constitution and elected a new Steering Committee. This promises to be a thriving two years, where cultural policy meets on the ground activism and where new ties will be built between networks, organizations and individuals across the continent and abroad. Gender equality in the cultural sector: UNESCO survey for African Entrepreneurs
As part of the preparation of the first global report on gender equality in the cultural sector by UNESCO, individuals are invited to participate in a survey on African entrepreneurs in the live arts (music, theatre and related arts, dance), fashion and design sectors. Deadline for responses is 4 November. (read more)
Brazzaville elected UNESCO Creative City
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has designated Brazzaville (Republic of Congo), Zahlé (Lebanon), Kraków (Poland) and Fabriano (Italy) as new members of its network of “creative hubs” promoting socio-economic and cultural development worldwide through creative industries. Brazzaville, designated “City of Music”, is the first African member of the Creative Cities Network. (read more)
Malawian movie wins award at the Silicon Valley African Film Festival
The Last Fishing Boat, written, directed and produced by Shemu Joyah whose company First Dawn Arts produced his award-winning movie Seasons of a Life in 2009, won the award for Best Narrative Feature Film. The Last Fishing boat narrates a cultural clash between traditional values and modernisation. (read more)

Ateliers du Cinéma / ACE Mundus: call for applications for film producers from non-EU countries
ACE Mundus is a 7-day workshop happening in late March, open to non-EU producers. The travel expenses within Europe for all of the selected producers are covered by the cost of the programme. Deadline: 8 November. (read more)
Rockefeller Center Arts & Literary Residency: call for applications
The Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center's mission is to promote innovation and identify impact-oriented solutions to critical global problems. Cadbury Fellowships 2014: class in Africa, a reassessment
The Cadbury fellowships programme, run by the Department of African Studies and Anthropology at the University of Birmingham, invites applications from early-career researchers based in African institutions who wish to discuss and develop the results of their primary research. Sauti za Busara Festival: call for music films
Sauti za Busara, East Africa's popular festival, will run its 11th edition during 13 – 16 February 2014 in Stone Town, Zanzibar, featuring more than 300 musicians and performers, an open-air film programme, and much more. It is looking to screen a variety of feature films about music, that tell a story about music or musicians from Africa. Deadline 30 November. (read more)
“Africa is Now” at Design Indaba: call for entries
Design Indaba invites designers and innovators from across Africa to participate in a major exhibition for the Design Indaba Expo 2014, 'Africa Is Now,' which will be held at the Design Indaba Expo 28 Feb-2 March 2014 in Cape Town. They are inviting creatives from across the African continent to apply for inclusion in the exhibition. Deadline 29 November. (Read more)
The Nile Project in Uganda: call for artists
The Nile Project will host its second annual music residency in Uganda this January. It is currently accepting applications from Nile Basin musicians to join the collective. Applicants must be available from January-March 2014 to participate in the gathering and a tour of the region. (read more)

The Journal for Artistic Research (JAR) is a peer-reviewed journal, publishing original research from artists of all disciplines. ACEC 2013 : troisième édition réussie de la troisième Conférence sur l’Economie Créative en Afrique

Arterial Network élit un nouveau Comité de Pilotage
Le jeudi 10 octobre, Arterial Network a tenu sa quatrième Conférence Biennale. Les membres ont élu un nouveau comité de pilotage. Ce nouveau comité promet au réseau deux années dynamiques et innovatrices. Avec Mr Aadel Essaadani du Maroc, comme président, et Mme Korkor Amarteifio, du Ghana comme vice-présidente, la politique culturelle sera couplée au militantisme de terrain. Le Dernier Bateau de Pèche, écrit et produit par Shemu Joyah, rendu célèbre en 2009, avec son premier long-métrage, Saisons d’une Vie, a reçu le prix de la meilleure narrative à Silicon Valley.
