Dear readers,
Welcome to TEH Newsletter #6 2011, featuring the latest news from Trans Europe Halles – a European Network of Independent Cultural Centres. The TEH Newsletter is produced by the TEH Coordination Office in Lund, Sweden.
One of literature's best-loved characters, Sherlock Holmes, once said that "Art is balm for the brain". Perhaps for Holmes and his fellow citizens in Victorian London, art had exactly this function. To sooth and to entertain. To be nice and comfortable. Today, as we see art and culture budgets being slashed in The Netherlands, in Portugal, in Slovenia, in the UK, working in the cultural sphere or being an artist fighting to survive is all but comfortable. Today we await the proposal for the next EU culture budget. But instead of just waiting, TEH members all over Europe act and react. We demonstrate, we debate, we create – and we make art that is not balm for the brain, but seeds and soil for the spirit.
Please note – there will be no TEH Newsletter in July, as the Coordination Office is closed for summer holiday. We will be back with sparkling fresh news at the end of August.

TEH prepare for Meeting 72 in Bordeaux
During some warm summer days, the TEH Coordination Office visited TNT – Manufacture de Chaussures in Bordeaux, France. TNT is the host of TEH Meeting 72, taking place on 27–30th October. This meeting will be the first platform of TEH's three-year network project Engine Room Europe, and will offer training and artistic workshops on the theme Neighbourhood | Voisinage. More information about the meeting is coming soon!

Engine Room Europe News Bulletin
This week, the first Engine Room Europe News Bulletin was sent to TEH Members and Friends. The bulletin listed upcoming activities at TEH centres across Europe, and opportunities to get involved. Information about opportunities for non-members, including open calls and invitations, will be posted in this monthly Newsletter, so watch this space!

Building Bridges at Mains d’Œuvres
"How to give me Utopia" is part of the Engine Room Europe project Building Bridges managed by Mains d’Œuvres (St Ouen, France). For one month, youngsters from a local high school have been developing ideas for the city of Saint-Ouen, within the fields of energy, farming and industrial production and consumption. The project was a great success and there will be another part next year.

IZOLYATSIA project focuses on former factory life
ZvukoIZOLYATSIA is an experimental audio-visual project created in a dialogue with the space of the former insulation materials plant in Donetsk, Ukraine. The project, presented on July 7 – 8th, wants to remind the audience of the factory’s former life.

The Right Bus to Europe leaves from Subtopia
The latest addition to the creative hub Subtopia (Stockholm, Sweden) is RättBuss (The Right Bus), a company in form of a large bus that houses bus-clubbing, concerts, art exhibitions and more. In July 2011, RättBuss are heading out on a one-month journey through Europe. Will it stop in your city?

PRAC collaborates with Zahrada, Slovakia
Pro Rodopi Art Centre (Bostina, Bulgaria) have started a collaboration with Slovakian independent cultural centre Zahrada. The project "Two Balls" focuses on the relationship between humans and Earth.

Łaźnia Nowa initiates volunteer project
In July 2011 Łaźnia Nowa (Cracow, Poland) will begin with a volunteer project dedicated to European cultural volunteers. Workshops, working sessions, volunteers exchanges and a symposium will take place up until June 2013.

Röda Sten (Dis)assemble the city
»(Dis)assembled« is a public building project and exhibition taking place at Röda Sten (Göteborg, Sweden) until August 21st. Constructions outside Röda Sten now include a skate ramp, a swing, a seesaw and a toilet!

New Artist in Residency platform in Maribor, Slovenia
TEH Member Pekarna Magdalenske Mreže has, in collaboration with MKC Maribor and Maribor 2012, established a new residency platform, Maribor GuestRoom. The aims are to open Maribor for foreign guest artists and to initiate long lasting connections of the art scene of Maribor with the international art scene. Deadline for applications is 10th July 2011.

Network of independent cultural centres in Spain and Portugal established
On June 3rd-5th, a meeting to constitute the Network of Independent Cultural Centers of Spain and Portugal took place in Espacio Tangente in Burgos, Spain. 19 centers participated in the encounter, together with TEH Ambassador Xavi Pérez and member of Culturaindependiente.com, José Luís Rodríguez.

Next EU culture budget proposal published today
Today, Wednesday 29th of June 2011, the Commission is expected to publish their proposal for the next multiannual EU budget beyond 2013. Culture Actions Europe's campaign we are more has collected over 14.000 signatures in support of a stronger culture budget for 2014 – 2020. In response to the proposal, Culture Action Europe will shortly publish a statement in a special newsletter edition, as well as a Campaign Message Book.
