SDCF Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation
SDCF Professional Development Program
- Applications for the 2023-2024 Season Cycle 1 are now open.
What is the SDCF Professional Development Program?
SDCF’s Professional Development Program provides opportunities for early career directors and choreographers to observe and/or support experienced directors and choreographers during the production process.
- The program’s primary focus will be emerging and early-career artists.
- There may be opportunities for mid-career artists during a season as well.
- Each opportunity will be determined around individual applications and the specific circumstances of the opportunity.
- Applicants do not need to be Members of SDC for most opportunities.
- Any opportunities that are only for SDC Members and Associate Members will be clearly labeled.
Applicants currently enrolled in a collegiate level institution must have completed their program by the start date of any opportunity they are applying for.
National Public Housing Museum
Artist as Instigator Residency Program
- Applications close: Friday, July 21, 2023.
- The National Public Housing Museum’s Artist as Instigator Residencyleverages arts and culture to make creative public policy interventions around housing and related issues.
- The annual residency supports artists, activists, and cultural workers to incubate ideas and produce new work in conjunction with social justice organizing and equitable development initiatives.
- This is an ideal opportunity for people with a demonstrated history of socially engaged projects.

New York Foundation for the Arts
Rauschenberg Medical Emergency Grants
- Applications close: Friday, July 21, 5:00 PM ET
- This program provides one-time grants of up to $5,000 for recent unexpected medical, dental, and mental health emergencies to artists in financial need* who are creating in the visual arts, film/video/electronic/digital arts, and choreography.
- Only generative artists are eligible—artists creating their own, independent work, with recent and ongoing opportunities for the public to experience that work.

The Network of Emerging Arts Professionals NEAP prepares the third edition of the International Theatre Exchange Festival -NEAPFEST BRASIL: IATE-ITI Diasporas, now is calling international artists to submit a performance, workshop, or to be considered to participate in a round table discussion or artistic residency.

Jefferson School/African American Heritage Center
Wilsonian Soldier Symposium
- Taking place October 23-28
- We will have panel discussions and master classes by four professional practitioners and a performance of Wilson’s theatrical memoir, How I Learned What I Learned.
- For the final season of August Wilson, and in keeping with our mission as an organization to “promote a greater understanding of the contributions of African Americans” and provide a space and place for Black artists to create unapologetically, we have planned a week long symposium to be held at the close of our season and the completion of the production of all ten plays.
Launching CCTA 2023!
The theme for Climate Change Theatre Action 2023, “All Good Things Must Begin,”
was inspired by the journal entry of American science fiction writer Octavia Butler.
Butler was incredibly prescient, writing about extremism, racial justice, and climate change some 30 years ago.
By setting intentions and visualizing a positive outcome, she defied the odds and became the author of many celebrated novels, winning each of science fiction’s highest honors.
While the worlds of her novels depict the violent challenges of today’s interlocking crises, her protagonists remain devoted to thriving, to achieving survival beyond the destructive and oppressive societies they come from.
The climate crisis demands the same kind of imaginative leap: we will create a just and regenerative world only if we dare to imagine it first, and use that vision to guide us through the difficulties.

2023 Res Artis Conference

Woolly Mammoth Theatre
Weissberg Commissioning Program
The Weissberg Foundation has provided a grant to Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company for the creation of the theatre’s first dedicated commissioning program.
Named in honor of the late theatre lover and philanthropist Marvin Weissberg, the commissions will function as a three-year program to support writers, directors, designers, choreographers, or other generative artists, both local and non-local, in the creation of innovative theatrical works with themes of social justice and a connection to the D.C. area.
The program will consist of full commissions, seed commissions, and finishing commissions, ranging from $5,000 to $25,000 per project.
They may fund completely new full-length plays, support workshops of an idea, or give artists the opportunity to finish incomplete works.
The selection of commissioned artists will be curated by new-work director Fernandez and artistic director Maria Manuela Goyanes.
At the conclusion of the three-year cycle, Woolly intends to continue with a commissioning program and develop the commissioning model over the next several years.
