RADICAL MODERNISMS: RETRACING ARAB AND NORTH AFRICAN FILM HISTORIES
a two-part program curated by Peter Limbrick, Professor of Film and Digital Media at UC Santa Cruz and author of Modernism as World Cinema: The Films of Moumen Smihi.
This program addresses aesthetic and cultural experiments that emerged in Arab and North African cinema from the 1960s, experiments that showed filmmakers and artists responding to histories of colonialism and the challenges of the present. Drawing on local vernaculars and international influences alike, these filmmakers created radical forms that deserve continued attention and discussion as well as urgent efforts of preservation and recirculation.

Call for nominations and applications for the 2022 Oak Human Rights Fellowship, sponsored by the Oak Institute for Human Rights at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. The fellowship provides a one-semester activist-in-residence opportunity for a human rights activist operating in difficult or dangerous circumstances to come to Colby College, one of the most prestigious liberal arts colleges in the United States, for respite from front-line duties so they can reflect on their experiences. .
The focus of this year’s search is Indigenous Rights. Indigenous people and their communities strive for political and cultural sovereignty and the ability to continue their livelihood, traditions, and culture on their ancestral lands. Around the globe, colonialism and the formation of modern nation-state borders have violated Indigenous people’s human rights and displaced communities. Capitalist ventures contribute to ecological exploitation that threatens Indigenous ecosystems and hastens premature death.
The deadline for nominations is November 30th, 2021, and for completed applications is December 30th, 2021. For more information, you can access our website; we call your attention to the frequently asked questions section to clarify terms and eligibility.
