Abuse of playwright in Bangalore: petition for legal action

Swar Thounaojam, a well-known playwright and theatre director was driving her car at 7 PM on 5/12/12 when her car was rear ended by a biker. She got down to talk to him when he started abusing her, a crowd of men gathered and joined in abusing her. She called a traffic constable for help, and instead of helping her he tried to get the offender to escape. When she tried to stop him, he punched her, grabbed her and threw her; the offender managed to getaway. A bigger crowd that had gathered tried to touch her and pull at her clothes, when she tried to take their pictures on her mobile phone, some of them started undressing and behaving obscenely, the traffic cop joined them and laughed at her. An FIR as been filed against the errant cop(who is supposed to protect and not assault) as well as the offending biker, and others who assaulted the victim. We demand that the errant cop be punished for negligence of duty and as well as for criminal offences of assault.

Kala Kalyana: Social Security Scheme for Artists

Presently, there are systems of support for artists like awards, fellowships, pensions (administered by the state and central Governments), aid to individuals and organisations but none of the above systems offer a comprehensive social security module in which artists are not just beneficiaries, but active premium-holders.

In order to address this lacuna, India Theatre Forum, an independent network of theatre practitioners, has developed a social security module. Named Kala Kalyana, this is a project initiated to develop a participatory Insurance scheme for artists and their dependents to provide security against ill health, accidents, infirmity, death and old age.

Please join us in petitioning the Indian Government to ideate and implement this social security scheme for Indian artistes.
