FOUR DAY WORKSHOP, 10-4 PM, MAY 21-24
An intensive and fun immersion into the techniques of Topeng masked drama, a unique and ancient theatre form which incorporates storytelling, mask work, dance and physical characterisation. The course will be led by Ida Bagus Alit, a lifelong performer of Topeng, who has skills, insights and innate knowledge of this extraordinary form of performance that few in the world possess.
The course is suitable for actors, dancers, storytellers, circus performers and students of performance with an interest in mask work and cross-cultural art forms. Participants will be immersed in a practical hands-on exploration of Topeng as well as contextual learning sessions with British based practitioners Margaret Coldiron and Tiffany Strawson. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of Topeng’s role in traditional and contemporary Balinese culture as well as its influence on current performance practice.
There will be a special Topeng performance event with Ida Bagus Alit on the evening of Saturday 24th May.

Cyflwyniad dwys a difyr i dechnegau drama fygydau Topeng, math o theatr sy’n hynafol ac unigryw, ac sy’n cynnwys elfennau o adrodd straeon, gweithio â mygydau, dawns a chymeriadu corfforol. Bydd y cwrs dan arweiniad Ida Bagus Alit, sydd wedi perfformio Topeng gydol ei oes. Ychydig iawn o bobl yn y byd sy’n meddu ar y sgiliau, y ddealltwriaeth a’r wybodaeth gynhenid sydd ganddo fe ynghylch y ffurf anhygoel hon ar berfformio.
Mae’r cwrs yn addas i actorion, dawnswyr, storïwyr, perfformwyr syrcas, a myfyrwyr perfformio sy’n ymddiddori mewn gwaith mygydau a chelf draws diwylliannol. Bydd y cwrs yn gyfle i archwilio Topeng yn ymarferol, yn ogystal â chael esboniad o'r cyd-destun gan ymarferwyr sy’n gweithio ym Mhrydain, sef Margaret Coldiron a Tiffany Strawson. Dyma gyfle i gael gwell dealltwriaeth o’r rhan y mae Topeng yn ei chwarae yn niwylliant traddodiadol a chyfoes Bali, yn ogystal â’i dylanwad ar ymarfer perfformiadol cyfredol.

Using Linklater based vocal exploration, creative movement and writing, this is an exploration of the Breath and Resonance of Archetype – an opportunity to delve deeper into the ‘archetype’ from which you usually speak and stretch the vocal boundaries of the archetypes which dwell in the shadow of the psyche. Bragod is the only ensemble performing historically-informed, medieval Welsh bardic music and poetry. Robert Evans and Mary-Anne Roberts will guide you through their 7-year experiment, which encompasses pitting the harmonics of the voice against a musical instrument and an intensely physical, communal exploration of the Trinidad carnival form, leading to a challenging, visceral sound-world.
