Paul Ibarluzea:

 Actor, Director and Theatre teacher with an extense international background. Teacher of theÉcole PHILIPPE GAULIER (Paris) and Clown of the CIRQUE DU SOLEIL. Graduated from theEcole International de Théâtre Lecoq (Paris) and Studies Escénics El Timbal (Barcelona).

Actor, Director and Theatre Educator com wide experience internationally. Professor at l'ÉcolePHILIPPE GAULIER (Paris) and the Cirque du SoleilClown. Graduated from the Ecole International de Théâtre Lecoq (Paris) andStudies Escénics El Timbal (Barcelona).

 

He has directed several shows for companies worldwide. Over the past few decades, it has become clear that the new style of circus is more than a passing fad. It is an ethical and aesthetic choice intrinsically linked to the life philosophy of a generation of artists who are increasingly moving away from the aesthetics and values of the past.

Nowadays, contemporary circus is as varied and multifaceted as the personalities of the people creating and performing it. As a performance discipline, circus has  always put technique, be it acrobatics or balancing acts, at the service of ideas and emotions. However, it has increasingly moved towards minimalism, a trend that is consistent with the fact that these days bold feats for the mere sake of being bold no longer represent the principal goal of artists or the main interest of audiences.

Though the natural ebb and flow of interest and the disappearance of venues do have an impact, but I believe these are only peripheral. Instead, I suspect that this tendency towards minimalism is mainly due to the fact that today’s generations of artists have reconnected with what drives human beings on a deep, basic level, and they wish to share it with spectators in an immediate and personal way. We’re currently seeing the proliferation of companies that put on small-scale shows in the ring or in small tents for a reduced number of spectators. The return to the ring marks a return to the circle, the most immediate and pure of all communicative spaces. There is a  lot of truth, a lot of personal experience in what these types of shows wish to convey. Obsessions, doubts, experiences, often transmitted through poetic language – what other language could it be? – that is as spontaneous as it is abstract.

The Mercat de les Flors presents a series of shows – pieces of distilled poetry – that vary greatly in terms of identity and style, but share an authenticity in terms of how they convey their authors’ message. At the  same time, they also provide an accurate look at a cross section of the tendencies dominating circus production in Catalonia and Europe today.

CALL for PARTICIPANTS in Rediscoveries in One Act: New Approaches to Teatro Breve from the Spanish Golden Age

Join an interdisciplinary team exploring the Siglo de Oro’s instructive teatro breveone-act plays with potent clues for building better ways to teach, stage, and research the richest script library known to history.

Teatro breve from the Spanish Golden Age (c. 1580-1680) includes satires and saint’s plays, star vehicles and character studies, musicals and thrillers, current-events commentaries and gripping meditations on metatheater, written by big-name playwrights – the cream of Spanish stagecraft, compressed for effective study.

In this working session, you’ll get up close and personal with selected entremeses (comic plays presented between the acts of a comedia), autos sacramentales (multilevel meditations staged for public celebrations of Corpus Christi), and their dramatic ancestors, while making significant contributions toward understanding them.

You’ll develop practical applications for incorporating teatro breve into your current work, you’ll pay particular attention to music and movement as tools for building meaning into performances, and you’ll actively engage in assessing, creating, and premiering performance-friendly translations of historically important, theatrically powerful one-acts.

You’ll join one of three teams:  Team Entremés, Team Auto Sacramental, or Team Translation.  Guided by session leaders (see list below) who bring you seasoned experience in a wide range of modern language and theater researches, you’ll collaborate with team members (dramaturgs, practitioners, teachers, and translators from all sorts of backgrounds) to:

Ø    read three one-act plays from the Spanish Golden age, post initial responses on the session’s wiki, and help your team select one play for detailed study (June-July);

Ø    thoughtfully consider context and criticism materials posted by team leaders (July-August);

Ø    compare translations/editions of plays selected for close study, and pose questions about them from performance, pedagogy, or critical perspectives (August-September);

Ø    write a brief position paper or a draft translation in response to questions posed, post this paper/translation on the wiki, and respond to team members’ postings (September-October);

Ø    synthesize discussion points/translation results into a presentation designed actively to involve others at the conference (October-November), and

Ø    present/perform highlights from your research, hear other teams’ reports, and participate in moderated discussion during ATHE’s conference in Dallas (November 7-10).

This new and unique workshop is for anyone that wants to direct Theatre or Film professionally. This workshop offers a hands on practical experience where Directors will work with Actors and Writing.

You, as a Director, will be able to develop your own approach to Creating Drama or Comedy, confidently guided by your own intuition and imagination and always within a solid structure:
You will learn how to direct actors by giving them a freedom and a structure at the same time, allowing them to create their best work.
You will learn to devise scenes and work up scripts. You will also learn how to recognize good writing and develop it (not everything is playable).
You will cover the basics of teamwork. You will also experience what is like to be directed.
You will fully experience the Creative Triangle: Writing, Acting and Directing.
Directors need to create a space and inspire an atmosphere where creative risks can be taken, without fear of failure and where effort and achievement can be recognized.

  • rasgos asiáticos/asian traces by Pregones Theater: a courageous portrayal of love between four generations of Mexican women and the historic confluence of China, Mexico and the U.S. In English.
  • Pájaro (Bird) by Gallinero Culeko Two traveling men who meet on the open road are inspired by a bird's flight to build a machine that will lead them to a safer place. This comical show is performed in Clown style by two recent graduates of Escuela Nacional de Arte Teatral in Mexico City. No spoken word.

Connecting Africa’s artists to residencies around the world. Click here to apply for AIR2012

The Africa Centre, together with artist in residency programmes in Australia, Brazil, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, South Africa and the United States of America have partnered to create the Artist in Residency (AIR) 2012 programme.  The programme has been conceived to support artists from Africa who are provocative, innovative, relevant and highly engaged with both social issues and their art forms. 

AIR manifests through existing artist in residency partnerships around the world that are prepared to select an artist from a short list provided by the Africa Centre, created from a Continental search, for one of their 2012 or 2013 residencies.
The costs of the residency and roundtrip airfare are included in each residency award made as part of this programme.

The residencies are available to all types of artists, but each residency on offer has different durations, structures and requirements. We are taking applications between 1 April and 15 June 2012.

Cultural audiences Conference – Barcelona 19-20 April 2012

From the group of museums articketBCN, in Barcelona, we are organising this conference on audiences in culture, for professionals working in all cultural sectors. The main subject is how different cultural institution (specially musems) with lots of tourist as their main audience, reach out to local audiences. And from there, the strategies to favour the habit of culture going at local level.

Las características de la MITEU son:

– Cobertura técnica (luz y música), alojamiento (2 noches) y manutención (2 días), a cargo de la organización para los actores y hasta un máximo de 4 personas más. Incluye, por tanto, a 2 o 3 técnicos y director/a o responsable.
– Desplazamiento a cargo del grupo que llega (es decir, vuestra Universidad)
En el caso de grupos de fuera de la Península Ibérica este capítulo es diferente.
– Por cuestiones de organización los espectáculos no deben superar las 2 horas de duración.
– Hay un punto de encuentro al término de las representaciones y se potencian los encuentros con la prensa escrita y las radios.

Open Call for Grants-Cultural Program 2012

The Cultural Department of the Consulate General of Spain in New York announces an OPEN CALL to apply for small grants for cultural projects taking place in the states of New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Connecticut and Pennsylvania in 2012. All proposals should be submitted to Águeda Sanfiz, Cultural Officer, by e mail, or postal mail no later than October 25th 2011 to the contact information provided below:

PROPOSAL GUIDELINES                                        

1. Mission

All cultural projects submitted through this grant process should comply with the mission of the Cultural Department of the Consulate General of Spain in New York.

The Government of Spain – through the Cultural Department of the Consulate General of Spain in New York City, promotes Spanish culture, language, and art, and strives to strengthen bilateral cultural, artistic and academic exchanges.

 This Spanish-American cultural cooperation aims to create multiple links between artists and cultural institutions of both countries, and to promote Spain's contemporary creative and artistic expressions. The Cultural Department presents many cultural programs – featuring dance, music, visual arts, literature, film, theatre, humanities, science, gastronomy, architecture, fashion, and design – in a variety of venues, in collaboration with American entities, throughout the states of New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. Therefore, the Consulate General of Spain will place special interest to projects resulting from a collaborative effort among several artist and arts organizations of New York and/or neighboring states.

All cultural and artistic activities supported by the Spanish Government in the US emphasize on diverse opinions and multiple forms of expression in line with Spain's own diversity in language, creativity and cultural heritage.

2. Eligibility:

a) Spanish nationals presenting projects in the states of New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Connecticut and Pennsylvania

b) Individuals and institutions from the US and other countries who are working with Spanish artist/s in projects that will be presented in the states mentioned above.

3. Time period:

All cultural projects subject to receive a grant through this Open Call should take place from January 1st 2012 to December 12th 2012

 4. Availability of funds

Funds will be available to the grantees only upon completion of the cultural project presented and awarded through this Open Call.

5. Notification

The resolutions for the application presented in this Open Call will be announced on an ongoing basis. All applicants will receive a response before March 1st 2012.

6. Changes and cancellations

The Cultural Department of the Consulate General of Spain in New York encourages all applicants to provide detailed information about the project presented through this Open Call, even if some components of it are subject to change within the upcoming months. However, all significant changes to projects awarded through this Open Call should be notified to the Cultural Department of the Consulate General of Spain in New York.
