Call for participation – Resistant Strategies

The Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics requests proposals for contributions to the multi-media “digital book” Resistant Strategies, which will focus on historical and contemporary Mayan strategies of resistance and their impact on the work of artists and activists in Mexico and beyond. The publication will be edited by Diana Taylor and developed using Scalar, an authoring and publishing platform designed to facilitate work that engages visual materials. Scalar enables users to assemble media clips and images from multiple sources and juxtapose them with their own writing in a variety of ways. The digital volume will be published by Duke University Press.

Resistant Strategies will explore how strategies of resistance that date back at least five hundred years in the Americas continue to retain their power to contest, persuade, and energize. Some strategies travel—they extend beyond the time and place of their emergence. They are taken up by others and transformed to address new issues. They form their own genealogy of performance, visual, and discursive practice. The book will unfold like a caracol, the shell of a snail, an icon of resistance in its own right that has been sacred from the time of the ancient Mayas to the contemporary Zapatistas. It will illustrate various resistant acts that have deep historical and artistic roots in Chiapas, the current capital of indigenous resistance in the Americas, and will trace how these acts and traditions expand outwards, operating in other moments and spaces. The innermost layer examines some of the cultural and historical reasons that Chiapas, “tierra de Indios” as Jesusa Rodríguez calls it, proves such a draw for both local Mayan and international artists and activists. The next layer explores the works of Mayan theatre artists, photographers, hip-hop, and graffiti artists who seek social justice through their interventions. The spiral then expands to the work of intellectuals and artists who work in solidarity with these Mayan activist communities and finally extends further to include the work of those who have been inspired by the work of contemporary Mayans—the Zapatistas most specifically. How has the masked figure of Sub Comandante Marcos spread to such prominence in the world? How have Mayan resistant practices become models for activists as diverse as Ricardo Dominguez and Reverend Billy? This book will engage and examine these persuasive, powerful resistant strategies.

We request proposals for essays, photo essays, interviews, video and multimedia presentations that take up these themes. Proposals should include a brief description of the work (150-250 words) and the author’s approach to it; samples of digital media, and a short author bio (150 words). Contributions may be in Spanish, English or Portuguese.

Please send your proposals via email to hemi.scalar@nyu.edu no later than Friday, May 18, 2012, and include "Resistant Strategies" in the subject line. Accepted contributors will be notified within 30 days of submission and final contributions will be due Friday, October 12, 2012.

La publicación será editada por Diana Taylor usando Scalar, una plataforma creativa de edición y publicación diseñada para facilitar obras y textos que utilizan material visual. Estrategias resistentes explorará cómo las estrategias de resistencia que datan de hace por lo menos quinientos años en las Americas continúan manteniendo su poder contestatario, de persuasión y dinamización. Algunas estrategias también viajan – se escapan del momento y el espacio de su gestación. Son apropiadas por otros y modificadas para enfrentar asuntos nuevos. Forman su propia genealogía de performance, de práctic
as visuales y discursivas. El libro se desenvolverá como un caracol, en sí un ícono de resistencia sagrado desde el tiempo de los antiguos Mayas hasta los Zapatistas contemporáneos. Este discutirá una variedad de actos resistentes con profundas raíces históricas y artísticas en Chiapas, la actual capital de la resistencia indígena en las Américas, y explorará la forma en la que estos actos y tradiciones se han expandido hacia fuera. El núcleo de la espiral examinará algunas de las razones históricas y culturales por las cuales Chiapas, “tierra de indios” como la llama Jesusa Rodríguez, constituye un espacio tan sugerente para artistas y activistas Mayas e internacionales. La siguiente capa explorará las obras de teatreros, fotógrafos, y artistas de hip-hop y graffiti Mayas, quienes luchan por la justicia social a través de sus intervenciones. La espiral se extiende luego al trabajo de intelectuales y artistas que se movilizan en solidaridad con estas comunidades activistas Mayas y ultimamente se expande más allá para incluir el trabajo de aquellos que han sido inspirados por los Mayas contemporáneos – en particular los Zapatistas. ¿Cómo es que la figura enmascarada del Subcomandante Marcos adquirió tal resonancia en el mundo? ¿De qué manera se han transformado las prácticas de resistencia mayas en modelos para activistas tan distintos como Ricardo Domínguez y Reverend Billy? Este libro explorará estas estrategias resistentes, persuasivas y poderosas.

Solicitamos propuestas de ensayos, foto-ensayos, entrevistas, y presentaciones de video y multimedia enfocadas en distintos aspectos de estos temas. Las propuestas deberán incluir una descripción breve de la pieza (150-250 palabras) y el enfoque que le dará el autor; así como muestras de obras digitales relevantes y una corta biografía del autor. Las propuestas y contribuciones pueden ser en español, inglés o portugués.

We write you with an update about our 8th Encuentro, "Bodies/Cities/Action." As you know, during the past few months we have been working hard to reschedule and relocate the event from Mexico City to São Paulo, Brazil. We had initially explored the possibility of holding it in August 2012, but we have decided, in conjunction with our Brazilian colleagues at USP and SESC in São Paulo, that it would be best to aim for January 2013.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and will let everyone know as soon as we have confirmation and exact dates.

Encuentros are the life and soul of Hemi. These face-to-face encounters and sharing of work make everything else we do possible. Even if organizing an Encuentro can sometimes be challenging, I hope you agree that they are worth the effort we all put into them.

Escribimos con noticias sobre la realización de nuestro 8vo Encuentro, "Ciudad/Cuerpo/Acción". Como sabrán, durante los últimos meses hemos estado haciendo grandes esfuerzos para reubicar el evento desde la Ciudad de México a São Paulo, Brasil. Inicialmente, exploramos la posibilidad de realizarlo durante el mes de agosto del 2012, pero hemos decidido, junto a nuestros colaboradores brasileños de la USP y el SESC, que lo más sensato sería esperar hasta enero del 2013 para su realización en São Paulo.

Inicialmente exploramos a possibilidade de realizá-lo durante o mês de agosto de 2012, porém decidimos, junto com a USP e o SESC, nossos colaboradores no Brasil, que o mais sensato seria nos planejarmos para janeiro de 2013.

Claustro cancels March Encuentro

Dear Hemi friends and colleagues:

It is with dismay that we write to inform you that the Universidad del Claustro de Sor Juana has abruptly withdrawn from its agreement to serve as the host institution for the 2012 Encuentro, citing "political and security" concerns in Mexico. We remain committed to holding an Encuentro during the coming year and are exploring all the options at our disposal in order to do so. The Institute is committed to maintaining the theme of the event and to honoring the application and selection process of participants. We will keep you posted as things develop over the coming days.

The Lark's 6th Annual U.S. / Mexico Playwright Exchange

Dear International League Members, Please be our guest for the 6th Annual U.S./Mexico Playwright Exchange, with public readings starting Saturday, November 12th! Three Mexican playwrights are teamed up with local bilingual playwright translators and the result is fresh translations of some of the most interesting new Mexican plays.  For our 4th translation this year, we have an exciting project. Caridad Svich will be working with director Barclay Goldsmith, the AD of Borderlands Theatre on a work by esteemed Mexican playwright, Victor Hugo Rascón Banda.

Although Mr. Rascon died in 2008, he is known internationally and was an avid supporter of this translation residency from its inception. In addition to readings of the four plays, I’d like to invite you to the Celebración on Monday, November 14th at 7:30 pm.  This culminating event is a fun way to hear excerpts of the plays and meet the artists at a post-reading reception.  Please RSVP to my assistant Zachary Tomlinson at ArtisticIntern2@larktheatre.org. Additionally, please note the two different locations of the events.

The Politics of Passion in the Americas

The 8th Encuentro of the Hemispheric Institute seeks to examine the broad intersections between urban space, performance and political/artistic action in the Americas. From the critical poetics of body art to the occupation of public space by social movements, the event invites participants to explore the borders, identities and practices through which subjectivities, hegemonies and counter-hegemonies are constructed in the spaces of the city and beyond. We are particularly interested in the ways in which bodies both interpellate and are interpellated, mobilize and are mobilized, by and around the diverse and complex passions that define our globalized and mediatized present—fear, hatred, disenchantment, hope and faith, among others. We seek to investigate, collectively, the strategies through which bodies (individual, social and political) make themselves present, and intervene aesthetic conventions, social formations and political structures in their search to create new meanings and new modes of sociality. This theme will be the point of departure for a vast array of performances, exhibits, roundtables, workshops, lectures and work groups.
Since 2000, our Encuentros have been a point of contact for artists, scholars, students and activists interested in the relationship between performance and politics in the Americas. Each Encuentro brings together 400-600 participants, and is part academic conference, part performance festival, and always interdisciplinary. The Encuentro is a space focused on experimentation, dialogue and collaboration.

El 8º Encuentro del Instituto Hemisférico busca examinar las amplias intersecciones entre el espacio urbano, el performance y la acción política y artística en las Américas. Desde las poéticas críticas del arte corporal hasta la ocupación del espacio público por movimientos ciudadanos, el evento invita a explorar las fronteras, identidades y prácticas a través de las cuales se construyen subjetividades, hegemonías y contra-hegemonías dentro de los espacios de la ciudad y sus afueras. En particular, nos interesan las formas en que los cuerpos interpelan y son interpelados, movilizan y son movilizados por y en torno a las complejas y diversas pasiones que circundan nuestro globalizado y mediatizado presente—el miedo, el odio, el desencanto, la esperanza, y la fe, entre otras. Buscamos investigar, colectivamente, las estrategias a través de las cuales los cuerpos (individuales, sociales y políticos) se hacen presente e intervienen las convenciones estéticas, las formaciones sociales y las estructuras políticas en su búsqueda de nuevos significados y nuevas formas de socialidad. Este marco temático será el punto de partida para una gran variedad de performances, exhibiciones, mesas redondas, talleres, ponencias y grupos de trabajo.
Desde el año 2000, nuestros Encuentros han sido un punto de contacto para artistas, académicos, estudiantes y activistas que investigan la relación entre performance y política en las Américas. Cada Encuentro reúne entre 400 y 600 participantes y es en parte una conferencia académica, en parte un festival de performance, y siempre interdisciplinario. El Encuentro es un espacio concentrado en la experimentación, el diálogo y la colaboración.

Buscamos investigar, coletivamente, as estratégias através das quais corpos (individuais, sociais e políticos) se fazem presentes e influenciam as convenções estéticas, as formações sociais e as estruturas políticas na sua busca por novos significados e novas formas de sociabilidade. Desde o ano 2000, os nossos Encuentros têm sido um ponto de contato ent
re artistas, acadêmicos, estudantes e ativistas interessados em investigar a relação entre a performance e a política nas Américas. Cada Encuentro reúne entre 400 e 600 participantes e é parte conferência acadêmica, parte festival de performance, e sempre interdisciplinar. O Encuentro é um espaço voltado para a experimentação, o diálogo e a colaboração.

The Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics is now planning its 8th Encuentro, which will take place at the Universidad del Claustro de Sor Juana in Mexico City on March 17-25, 2012. We are very much looking forward to this gathering—so please mark your calendars! 

Tentatively titled "Cities | Bodies | Action," the 9-day event will examine the broad intersections between urban space, performance and political action in the Americas. From the critical poetics of body art to the occupation of public space through political protest, the Encuentro will explore the complex ecology of boundaries, identities and practices in and through which power is forged, reproduced and contested across urban space.  Taking advantage of our privileged location in the heart of Mexico City’s Historic Center, this theme will be the point of departure for a range of performances, installations, exhibits, roundtable discussions, workshops, long tables, lectures, and work groups.

Estamos muy entusiasmados con esta próxima oportunidad de encontrarnos, así que por favor reserven las fechas.

Tentativamente titulado “Ciudad | Cuerpo | Acción,” el evento de 9 días examinará las amplias intersecciones entre el espacio urbano, el performance y la acción política en las Américas. Desde las poéticas críticas del arte corporal a la ocupación del espacio público por la protesta política, el Encuentro buscará explorar la compleja ecología de fronteras, identidades y prácticas a través de las cuales el poder es construido, reproducido, interrumpido y socavado en el espacio urbano. Aprovechando nuestra privilegiada ubicación en el Centro Histórico de la Ciudad de México, este tema será el punto de partida para una gran variedad de performances, instalaciones, exposiciones, mesas redondas, talleres, mesas largas, conferencias y grupos de trabajo.

Summer 2011: Art and Resistance—Applications online! | Verano 2011: Arte y resistencia—solicitudes en la página web‏

 

San Cristobal de las Casas, Mexico, July 24–August 13, 2011
Taught by Diana Taylor and Jesusa Rodríguez (Resistencia Creativa, Mexico)

This course explores the many ways in which artists and activists use art (performance, mural paintings, graffiti, writing, music) to make a social intervention in the Americas.  We begin the course by examining several theories about art and activism (from Plato and Aristotle to Brecht, Boal, Buenaventura, Ngugi wa Thiong’o, and Foucault, among others) and then focus on issues of agency, space, event, and audience in relation to major political movements (revolution, dictatorship, democracy, globalization, and human rights) as seen in the work of major practitioners. Jesusa Rodríguez will lead an intensive one-week  workshop on activist performance as part of the course. Performances, film screenings, guest lectures, and visits to FOMMA, a Zapatista community and other activist projects will provide an additional dimension to the questions raised by the theoretical readings and discussions. Students will be encouraged to explore possibilities for practice-based research, develop their own sites of investigation, and share their work in a final presentation.

We invite students from all member institutions of the Hemispheric Institute to apply. NYU students may take the course for 4 pts of graduate credit through the Department of Performance Studies, and students from other institutions can take the course for credit as independent study in their home universities. Students from non-member institutions will be considered for admission, though priority will be given to graduate students from member institutions.

The course requires fluency in English. Knowledge of Spanish is a plus. Students are encouraged to bring laptops and digital cameras to use for their projects.

Lab fee $1000

A lab fee will apply to all—$1000 for students in the U.S. Canada, and Europe, and $250 for those in Latin America. While housing and travel costs are separate, the Hemispheric Institute is negotiating very reasonable costs for room and board. All local expenses (performances, lectures, travel to local sites, etc., will be covered by the lab fee).

The deadline for applications is April 15th, 2011.

Este curso explora las diversas formas mediante las cuales los artistas y activistas en las Américas utlizan el arte (performance, muralismo, grafiti, escritura, música) para hacer una intervención social. Empezaremos el curso examinando diferentes teorías sobre el arte y el activismo (desde Platón y Aristóteles hasta Brecht, Boal, Buenaventura, Ngugi wa Thiong’o y Foucault, entre otros) y luego nos enfocaremos en temas como agencia, espacio, evento y audiencia en relación a movimientos y momentos políticos trascendentales (revolución, dictadura, democracia, globalización y derechos humanos) presentes en la obra de importantes creadores. Jesusa Rodríguez dictará un taller intensivo de performance durante una de las semanas del curso. Performances, muestras de video, ponentes invitados y visitas a FOMMA, Chiapas Media Project, una comunidad zapatista y otros proyectos activistas brindarán una dimensión adicional a las preguntas propuestas en las lecturas teóricas y las discusiones. Los estudiantes serán invitados a explorar las posibilidades para realizar investigación basada en la práctica, desarrollar sus propios proyectos de investigación y exponer sus trabajos en una presentación final.

Invitamos a los estudiantes de todas las instituciones miembro del Instituto Hemisférico a postular. Los estudiantes de NYU pueden tomar el curso de 4 puntos a través del Departamento de Estudios de Performance. Los estudiantes de otras instituciones pueden recibir créditos de sus instituciones al tomar el curso como seminario independiente en sus respectivas universidades. Los estudiantes de instituciones no afiliadas al Instituto Hemisférico pueden postular, pero se les dará prioridad a los estudiantes de posgrado de las instituciones afiliadas al Instituto.

Para participar en el curso, se requiere un dominio básico del inglés (leer, escribir, hablar). Los estudiantes deben traer, si pueden, sus computadoras y cámaras digitales para utilizarlas en sus proyectos.

Costo de inscripción

El costo de inscripción para el curso es de USD $1000 para estudiantes en EE.UU., Europa y Canadá, y de USD $250 para estudiantes en América Latina. Los costos de transporte y estadía en San Cristóbal no están incluidos en este monto. El Instituto está organizando opciones económicas de alojamiento para participantes. Todos los gastos locales (performances, ponencias, transporte a lugares cercanos, etc.) están incluidos el costo de inscripción.

La fecha límite es 15 de abril, 2011.

As globalization calls us to imagine a geography of equal access, built on trade agreements and relationships of mutuality, it inspires ongoing critical interrogations in theatre, applied theatre, and performance, impacts the form and content of new writing and theatre-making, the uses of new technology, and the shift in how work is funded, supported, and staged (immersive, site-responsive and site-specific).

 

The emergence of the global South, however, invites back into the picture the idea of parallel spaces in unequal relationships of interdependency. Are we experiencing a new spin on last century’s “first/third world” model best suited for current neoliberal ideology, or is this indeed a new paradigm, wherefrom a new construction of memory and a performative praxis are re-defining spaces of exclusion? Is this South opening to opportunities where new work is being created and staged in theatres, community halls, and non-traditional performance venues?

 

What comes to mind when the word South is mentioned? In this issue of CTR, we wish to explore the vast range of associations that the word conjures in our contemporary imaginary, and also how to move away from simple binaries especially where definitions of north against south are concerned, including, but not limited to

 

South as in the southern hemisphere or nations in the southern hemisphere

South as zone of resistance to exclusion from global narratives

South as space of solidarity and belonging

The southern voice, tongue, utterance of a given city, region, country or countries

The performing political body and its south/sexuality (as affirmation of self? as confirmation of “northern” rationality…?)

The imagined “Sur” of South America and “el cono sur” of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay

The south as pole of magnetic reference (“el sur es nuestro norte”)

Mythologies of southern-ness, frontier and terra incognita

How does southern theatre, its performance and touring networks differ from the northern/western model? 

Has the South replaced the East as “exotic other,” and/or has it deepened its postcolonial subalternality?

 

We invite essays, articles, interviews with theatre and performance makers, and short reflections and polemical pieces for our upcoming issue.

California: Los Angeles Mayor Leads Cultural Delegation to Mexico

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa visited Mexico on November 27–30, leading a delegation to Guadalajara for its International Book Fair and a speaking engagement in Mexico City. Villaraigosa lead more than 450 authors, artists, filmmakers, and musicians to Guadalajara for its International Book Fair, where Los Angeles was the guest of honor. Villaraigosa joined the artists in illustrating the best of Los Angeles in more than 100 exhibitions, performances, films, readings, and lectures, an aide said. Before departing, Villaraigosa said, "For nine days, Los Angeles will expose its vibrant literature, film, dance, and theater in one of the largest celebrations of art in the world. At a time when tourism is such a vital component of our economy, this delegation will work to promote and sell the culture of L.A. to the world."
