Burqavaganza by Shahid Nadeem

Burqavaganza – a love story in the time of jihad – is a sassy, provocative Bollywood extravaganza, written by Pakistan's most prolific and progressive playwright, Shahid Nadeem, co-founder of Ajoka Theatre in Lahore, Pakistan. Burqavaganza uses the burqa as a metaphor for a society that thrives on double standards and covering up the truth. The entire cast, male and female, wears a burqa. Burqavaganza goes toe to toe with the long standing obsession with the burqa, face-veil, niqab, hijab, parda – and offers a side-splitting critique on rising fundamentalism, political corruption, and the War on Terror. Banned in Pakistan by the National Arts Council in 2010, Burqavaganza is a ground breaking political satire that provokes the audience to rethink and lift the veil of prejudice, outdated values, and hypocrisy within all societies.

Brava! For Women in the Arts and RasaNova Theater Company present a groundbreaking play directed by Vidhu Singh, Burqavaganza, here in San Francisco from May 16th to June 2nd at the Brava Theater. A sassy, provocative political satire, Burqavanza uses Bollywood tropes and other entertaining devices to examine the burqa as a metaphor. Burqavaganza goes toe to toe with the long standing obsession with the burqa, face-veil, niqab, hijab, parda – and offers a side-splitting critique on rising fundamentalism, political corruption, and the War on Terror.

Written by Pakistan’s premier playwright, Shahid Nadeem, this play has been banned in Pakistan. There is already great excitement for the U.S. premier of the work, and we have received some excellent press. Check out these great articles in the SF Weekly and SF Bay Guardian

However, we need your help to make this show a success! Funding for these types of productions is very difficult to come by and we are cobbling together support from multiple sources to make this show happen. We need support from the community to make the production a reality.

You can help support the San Francisco production, and ensure that the play receives the necessary funding to reach American audiences in this diverse city.  Here is how:

1) We have launched a Kickstarter Campaign to help the production, and really need to meet our goal. Please find the Campaign page here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1662619954/burqavaganza-a-satirical-love-story-in-the-time-of

P.S. – Do  you want to know more about Kickstarter? Here’s a little info:

Kickstarter is a funding platform for creative projects. Filmmakers, artists, authors, musicians, directors, photographers and designers bring their creative dreams to Kickstarter to obtain the funding they need to bring their projects to life. Each project is independently created and controlled by the person behind it. We decided to use Kickstarter as a fundraising tool for Burqavaganza because it’s an excellent platform to share our story on the web. Kickstarter gives us a one-stop-shop to share a video, talk about the power of the work, and allow supporters to make a contribution.

If you like our project, you can pledge money to make it happen. If our project meets its funding goal by the deadline, all the backer’s credit cards will be charged. However, if the project falls short, no one is charged. Funding on Kickstarter is all or nothing. We hope that you find our Kickstarter page interesting, and compelling: : http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1662619954/burqavaganza-a-satirical-love-story-in-the-time-of  Thank you for reading!
