Launching CCTA 2023!

The theme for Climate Change Theatre Action 2023, “All Good Things Must Begin,”

was inspired by the journal entry of American science fiction writer Octavia Butler.

Butler was incredibly prescient, writing about extremism, racial justice, and climate change some 30 years ago.

By setting intentions and visualizing a positive outcome, she defied the odds and became the author of many celebrated novels, winning each of science fiction’s highest honors.

While the worlds of her novels depict the violent challenges of today’s interlocking crises, her protagonists remain devoted to thriving, to achieving survival beyond the destructive and oppressive societies they come from.

The climate crisis demands the same kind of imaginative leap: we will create a just and regenerative world only if we dare to imagine it first, and use that vision to guide us through the difficulties.

Woolly Mammoth Theatre
Weissberg Commissioning Program

The Weissberg Foundation has provided a grant to Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company for the creation of the theatre’s first dedicated commissioning program.

Named in honor of the late theatre lover and philanthropist Marvin Weissberg, the commissions will function as a three-year program to support writers, directors, designers, choreographers, or other generative artists, both local and non-local, in the creation of innovative theatrical works with themes of social justice and a connection to the D.C. area.

The program will consist of full commissions, seed commissions, and finishing commissions, ranging from $5,000 to $25,000 per project.

They may fund completely new full-length plays, support workshops of an idea, or give artists the opportunity to finish incomplete works.

The selection of commissioned artists will be curated by new-work director Fernandez and artistic director Maria Manuela Goyanes.

At the conclusion of the three-year cycle, Woolly intends to continue with a commissioning program and develop the commissioning model over the next several years.

MORE VISA NEWS

IMPORTANT VISA INFORMATION

TOURING VISA PRICE HIKE

Musicians in the USA and abroad have been fighting to oppose a proposed hike in the fees for touring visas for international artists, with a public commentary on the policy ending yesterday (March 14).

The new guidelines, proposed by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) would see costs for O-1 and P-2 touring visas more than triple under the new policy, with the O-1 visas for “individuals with extraordinary ability or achievement” increasing from $460 to $1,655. P-2 visas would jump from $460 to $1,615.

The USCIS, part of the Department of Homeland Security, proposed the changes in January, arguing that the new rates would reflect an increase in costs at the agency.

The Union of Musicians and Allied Workers (UMAW), launched a letter campaign, urging US musicians to write to their local congressperson, arguing that the proposed hike to international artist touring costs would hurt local musicians and the music industry as well, providing fewer opportunities for smaller artists.

In a statement posted on Action Network, the UMAW wrote: “U.S. Citizenship and Immigrations Services (USCIS) has proposed to more than triple the visa fees that international musicians must pay to tour the United States.

“Under this proposal the cost for P and O visas would go from $460 to over $1600 (a 250%) increase, drastically affecting international artists as well as broader U.S. music and cultural industries,” it continued. “The cost of the current visas were already prohibitive for many, but the rising costs associated with touring paired with the tripled cost of a visa will severely impact the desire and ability for international artists to perform here, affecting lower-income and marginalized artists the most.

Bye-bye American pie: high price of visas keeps British musicians off US tours

Ever since Beatlemania, UK acts have set their sights across the pond. Now spiraling costs are pulling the plug.

“Breaking” America has been the goal of young British musicians since the days of Beatlemania, but that dream is being dashed. Hundreds of emerging artists could be affected by plans to hike visa fees by 250% – and music industry executives have criticized ministers for failing to act.

The US immigration service wants to raise visa costs from $460 (£385) to $1,615 (£1,352) alongside other changes that artists and their managers say would make it almost impossible for anyone but the biggest stars to perform in the US.

The MMF and Fac have relaunched Let the Music Move (#LetTheMusicMove), a campaign that began in 2021 to fight the effects of post-Brexit trade arrangements, which are still hampering musicians. Trucking firms that transport music equipment have had to register as EU companies, and crew cannot work in the EU for more than 90 days out of every 180.

Martin said the UK’s global share of recorded music has fallen from 17% in 2015 to just 10% after increased competition from Latin American music and K-pop. “They gave the fishing industry £23m to adjust post-Brexit, and the music industry is about 12 or 13 times bigger for this country,” he added.

A government spokesperson said: “We are aware of the issues regarding UK artists touring the US and will discuss the sector’s concerns with the relevant authorities.”

TWB Borderless Event at University of Iowa

TWB Borderless Event at University of Iowa

Borderless is a series curated by the University of Iowa Department of Theatre Arts that is dedicated to producing an array of theatrical works representative of the diversity of experiences essential for students, faculty, administrators, and greater Iowa City community members to encounter onstage. As a predominantly-white institution (PWI), this initiative emerged in spring 2020 under the name “Diverse Voices” and has been renamed Borderless in the fall of 2020 to more clearly embrace its essential pillar: collaboration. We’re dedicated to working beyond the walls of the Theatre Building and permeating borders between university departments, across campus, and to the professional theatre world.

Borderless aims to a) provide a tailored, collaborative theatrical experience to an artist sharing a unique perspective, b) the opportunity for our students to work alongside an artist outside of the university, c) encourage collaboration with students and faculty of other departments and programs on campus, and d) introduce audiences that are regular Department of Theatre Arts production attendees as well as new theatregoers to view a compelling event told from a what will hopefully be a new perspective.

The inaugural event of the series was a staged reading and discussion of Reconciliation by Marisa Carr (Turtle Mountain Ojibwe) in the spring of 2020. Click here to see all past Borderless events.

A MESSAGE FROM TRANS EUROPE HALLES

Trans Europe Halles (TEH) is a grass-roots network of 135 cultural organizations from 39 European countries.

TEH is in solidarity with Ukraine and would like to express our support to our members, partners, peers and friends in the country.

We are deeply troubled by the news from Ukraine and are concerned for the well-being and safety of the staff of our member centres there: IZOLYATSIA, ReZavod, Jam Factory Art Center and Dnipro Center for Contemporary Culture. We condemn Putin’s regime for bringing despair, tragedy and pain to a peaceful nation. At TEH we believe that Ukraine is an independent country with its own cultural heritage, language, mentality, history and territory. Nothing can justify Russian occupation and aggression against this nation.

It pains us to see our Ukrainian colleagues forced to flee with their families, abandon their work and homes, being scared for the well-being of their loved ones and having to leave their peaceful lives to join the army. This cannot be happening and we urge the wider European community, our colleagues, partners and peers to SPEAK UP, PROTEST and DEMAND their local MPs to take action!

We, as a community of grass-roots cultural and creative professionals, do not justify violence of any form and see human life as the greatest value. We cannot stand aside while our colleagues in Ukraine are being thrown out of their homes and have to fight for their lives. That is why we commit to come with an action plan to support our peers in need and help them go through this crisis.

What can you do now?

We are starting to look into possible resources and opportunities within our network. For the time being, we have made a list of suggestions that can be done now to support Ukraine.

DONATE

1. Donate money to humanitarian organisations/ initiatives

We prepared a list of initiatives and funds where you can donate money to support Ukrainian civilian society. If you know of any other relatable campaigns, please let us know at events@teh.net:

  1. https://www.gofundme.com/f/kyivindependent-launch – an independent media from Ukrain covering the events needs financial support to continue working
  2. https://redcross.org.ua/donateRed Cross Office in Ukraine / a world-known organisation that does a lot of humanitarian work, from helping refugees to training doctors.
  3. https://novaukraine.org – a non-profit organisation that provides citizens with everything they need in the time of crisis, from baby food and hygiene products to clothing and household items.
  4. https://vostok-sos.org/en/ – a non-governmental organisation that provides humantarian, psychological help and shelter for internally displaced persons (IDPs).
  5. https://voices.org.ua/en – a charity organisation that helps children to recover from psychological traumas of war.
  6. https://www.care.org – a global charity organisation that supports most vulnerable groups. They have launched a campaign for Ukraine.

2. TEH Solidarity Fund

TEH has launched now its own TEH Solidarity Fund. We will use this fund to collect money to help our members and their families in need. We will share what the money is being used to with the network on regular basis and make sure there is full transparency about it.

You can donate to our fund if you want to support our members-in-need and the effort we are doing to show solidarity with artist under threat.

Welcome to my Resource/Newsletter! From Shahid Nadeem/ World Theatre Day: “We need to replenish our spiritual strength; we need to fight apathy, lethargy, pessimism, greed and disregard for the world we live in, the Planet we live on. Theatre has a role, a noble role, in energizing and mobilizing humanity to lift itself from its descent into the abyss. It can uplift the stage, the performance space, into something sacred.”
