1. Grants for films on minority cultures
Posted by: "National Geographic" National Geographic   art4development
Fri Apr 29, 2011 11:28 am (PDT)

A National Geographic film project funds projects by or about indigenous and underrepresented minority cultures around the world.

The All Roads Film Project, sponsored by National Geographic, funds film projects year-round. The grants are open to both minority-culture filmmakers and those who can demonstrate that they have been designated by a minority community to tell their story.

Grants range from US$1,000 to US$10,000. Submission deadlines are the fifteenth of March, June, September and December.

Filmmakers who have completed a film related to this theme, either with or without the grant, can submit their entries to the All Roads Film Festival, held September 14 to 18, 2011.

The deadline for film festival submissions is May 2. To see past projects and read blog posts by participating filmmakers, click here.

Fri Apr 29, 2011 11:28 am (PDT)

Filmmakers from around the world who focus on social issues can enter a contest.

The Media That Matters Film Festival highlights short films on the most important topics of the day for local, global, and online communities with the goal of engaging audiences and inspiring them to take action.

Now in its 11th edition, any and al
l issues will be considered. This year, however, organizers are particularly interested in films focusing on disability rights, interfaith dialogue and religious tolerance, bias-based bullying, gender equality and youth activism. The contest is open to documentaries, narratives, animations, music videos, public service announcements, dramas, comedies and other hybrid types of films. You can watch last year's winners here.

Entries should be no longer than 10 minutes; the ideal length is around eight minutes.

The judges select 12 finalists, who receive US$1,000 each to assist them in future filmmaking efforts.

4. Film Project seeks documentaries
Posted by: "The Economist" The Economist   art4development
Fri Apr 29, 2011 11:28 am (PDT)

A new joint media project provides funds for documentary makers.

Until January 2012, The Economist and PBS NewsHour are funding short documentaries from Abu Dhabi to Albuquerque on a range of topics from astronomy to agriculture.

The aim of The Economist Film Project is to showcase the selected segments, films and filmmakers as broadly as possible.

The project seeks submissions of completed documentary films on a rolling basis continuing monthly through January 2012.

Both documentary shorts and feature-length films may be submitted. The Economist will provide filmmakers whose films are chosen with a grant of US$4,000 to produce six to eight minutes of footage from the film to air on PBS NewsHour.

The featured films will also be made available to a wider audience on The Economist's YouTube channel, Facebook fan page and the PBS NewsHour website, YouTube and Hulu channels.

5. International one-day seminar: Mobility and Artistic development in
Posted by: "RCF" The Roberto Cimetta Fund   art4development
Fri Apr 29, 2011 11:28 am (PDT)

« Mobility and artistic development in the Mediterranean »

The Roberto Cimetta Fund (RCF), is an international non-profit making organisation that was created in 1999 to respond rapidly and directly to artists and cultural managers who wish to travel in order to develop contemporary artistic cooperation projects in the Euro-Mediterranean region, and in particular throughout the Arab world and the Balkans.

RCF is organising with the support of the French Ministry of Culture and Communication and the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, an international seminar on the theme of "Mobility and Artistic development in the Mediterranean" which will take place on Friday 6th May 2011 from 9h30 to 17h30 in the premises of the Ministry of Culture, 182 rue St. Honoré in Paris. Indeed, the current uprising of civil society and the demand for freedom and democracy in the Arab world calls for a response from the EU and national institutions but also from the European civil society.

Key stakeholders, artists and institutional representatives from 14 countries (Egypt, Tunisia, Syria, Jordan, Turkey, Serbia, Croatia, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands) will be able to share information and expertise, opening up a space of dialogue and joint reflection in order to formulate strategic and pragmatic recommendations that will feed into the definition of a common action plan for artistic and cultural mobility as an essential tool for the implementation of the principles of cultural rights, cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue between Europe and its Mediterranean neighbours as formulated in a number of cultural policy agendas (Fribourg Declaration, UNESCO Convention on the promotion and protection of the diversity of cultural expressions, Agenda 21 for Culture, The European Agenda for Culture).

Three working sessions will focus on the current situation for artists and cultural operators in the South and East Mediterranean countries, the policies and programmes currently set up and the synergies that need to be developed to be effective and coherent. A rapporteur will take note of the different recommendations and suggest a first draft of an action plan at the end of the day. This action plan and a report will be published and made available through the Cimetta Fund website.

This meeting receives the support of the French Ministry of European and Foreign Affairs, the French Ministry of Culture and Communication and the French Embassies in Madrid and Rome

The Annual General Meeting of the Fund will take place on 7th May at the French Office of Artistic Distribution (ONDA) in Paris.

Photojournalists working for social change can apply for a grant.

The Open Society Documentary Photography Project, sponsored by the Open Society Foundations, offers grants to encourage new ways of presenting documentary photography to the public.

Photographers will take an existing body of work on a social justice or human rights issue and devise an innovative way of using that work to create social change.

Projects should include a partnership between a photographer and an organization that combines expertise in documentary photography with experience working on the topic. Five to eight grants of US$5,000 to US$30,000 will be awarded.

10. Between Grace and Fear: The Role of the Arts in a Time of Change
Posted by: "William Cleveland" William Cleveland
Fri Apr 29, 2011 11:54 am (PDT)

I hope you are warm and happy this spring.

My colleague Patricia Shifferd and I have a new book out that asks, what we think, is an important question:

What is the role of the arts in a time of change?

The book is called Between Grace and Fear. It includes commentary by 30 activist thinkers and creators working in the arts, science, religion, politics, education, philanthropy, human services, and community development.  What they have to say is insightful, provocative, and yes, even humorous. We learned a lot putting it together.  We hope you do too when you read it.

You can find out more about it at:

http://artsinsociety.com/2010/08/between-grace-and-fear-the-role-of-the-arts-in-a-time-of-change/

A description of the book is also attached

Here are a few quotes:

The role of an artist within society as provocateur & citizen as change agent has always existed; it just falls in & out of favor.

Judy Baca, muralist, educator, activist, founder, Social and Public Art Resource Center

To the extent that art becomes co-opted as in propaganda & advertising, it becomes the servant of Empire.

David Korten, Author, When Corporations Ruled the Earth, The Great Turning

The arts are very revolutionary & we artists do cause problems, because the arts expand awareness.

Nakai, 7 time Grammy nominated recording artist

But why not also talk about the prophetic role of art which calls into question hunger or war.

Wilson Yates, President Emeritus, United Theological Seminary,Author, Arts Theology, and the Church

Thanks
