Dear artists,
AFRICAN PLAYWRIGHTS’ PROJECT
Arterial Network, in association with TeatrNowy in Poland, the
National Theatre Studio in London and South Africa’s National Arts
Festival and ARTSCAPE Theatre, hereby calls for the submission of
scripts by African playwrights living in Africa as part of a project
to promote African theatre on the African continent, in Europe and
indeed globally.
Aims
The primary aims of the project are:
1.to introduce African theatre-makers (writers, directors and actors)
to regional and international theatre markets in a manner that builds
and sustains the presence of African theatre in these markets on a
medium- to long-term basis;
2.to establish formal partnerships and collaborative projects between
theatres, festivals and theatre institutions in Europe and Africa in
order to learn from each other, influence the content and form of each
other’s work and increase global market access for African theatre in
particular ;
3.to contribute to the emergence and upskillingof new African
playwrights, and to provide platforms to project excellent theatre
work from Africa to Europe and beyond;
4.to engage in debates, research and intellectual and aesthetic rigour
through seminars, residencies and exposure to each other’s work as a
means of contributing to global and continental debates about the
practice and future of theatre-making in an ever-changing, globalised
world.
Outcomes
The projected outcomes of this project for 2011 are:
1.the selection of 4-8 African playwrights to participate in
dramaturgical workshops at the National Theatre Studio (see
http://www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/11771/studio/introduction.html);
2.the selection of at least 5 plays for inclusion in an African Play
Series publication, a version of which will be produced annually;
3.staged readings of some of the selected work at theatres in Africa and Europe;
4.the selection of at least one play for production in Europe and/or
Africa in 2012.
Submissions
Plays may be submitted on any theme, and in any genre, style and
language. If the play is not in English, it will be read in its
original language.
As 2011 marks the initiation of this project, we are not looking for
entirely new, un-staged or unpublished work. The aim of the project in
2011 is to identify African playwrights who have the best potential to
stage their work in regional and international arenas.
All scripts should be typed (no handwritten submissions will be accepted).
Submissions are to include the writer’s full name, email address,
postal address, country of residence and telephone number (country
code, city code and number). Each writer may submit only one script.
Submissions may be sent by email to Rebecca Radford (Subject line:

Submissions may also be sent by post to African Playwrights’ Project,
Arterial Network, Union House, 25 Commercial Street, Cape Town, 8001,
South Africa.

Les objectifs
Les principaux objectifs de ce projet sont :
1.Introduire les acteurs du théâtre africain (scénaristes, metteurs en
scène, acteurs) sur les marchés régionaux et internationaux de théâtre
de manière à renforcer et à soutenir la présence du théâtre africain
sur ces marchés à moyen et long terme.
2.De mettre en place des partenariats formels et projets de
collaboration entre les institutions de théâtre en Europe et en
Afrique afin d’apprendre des uns des autres, d’influencer le fonds et
la forme du travail des uns et des autres et d’accroître l’accès au
marché mondial pour le théâtre africain en particulier.
3.De contribuer à l’émergence et à la requalification de nouveaux
dramaturges africains et de fournir des plateformes pour projeter
d’excellent travail de théâtre depuis l’Afrique en Europe et au-delà.
4.D’engager des débats, recherche et une rigueur intellectuelle et
esth��tique a travers des séminaires, des résidences et de se mettre
avec le travail des uns et des autres comme moyen de contribuer aux
débats global et continental sur la pratique et l’avenir des activités
de theatre dans un monde en constante évolution et globalisation.
Résultats attendus
Les résultats escomptés de ce projet pour 2011 sont :
1.La sélection de 4 à 8 dramaturges africains pour participer aux
ateliers de travail de dramaturgie du Studio National de Theatre de
Londres,

2.La sélection d’au moins 5 pièces de theatre pour l’inclusion dans
une publication africaine de Séries de Pièces Théâtrales dont une
version sera produite chaque année.
3.Lectures scéniques de certains des travaux sélectionnées dans les
salles de théâtre en Afrique et en Europe.
4.La sélection d’au moins une pièce pour production en Europe et ou en
Afrique en 2012
Soumissions
Les pièces peuvent être soumises sur n’importe quel thème, dans
n’importe quel genre, style et langue. Si la pièce n’est pas en
anglais, elle sera lue dans sa langue originale.
Comme 2011 marque le lancement de ce projet, nous ne cherchons pas des
travaux entièrement nouveaux, non encore mis en scène ou non publiés.
L’objectif de ce projet en 2011 est d’identifier des dramaturges
africains qui ont le meilleur potentiel de mettre en scène leurs
travaux dans les arènes régionales et internationales.
Tous les scripts doivent être saisis (les soumissions de scripts
écrits à la main ne seront pas acceptées)
Les soumissions doivent comporter les noms complets du scénariste, son
adresse électronique (mail), adresse postale, pays de résidence et le
numéro de téléphone (code du pays, code de la ville et numéro). Chaque
scénariste ne peut soumettre qu’un seul script.
