TWB Borderless Event at University of Iowa

TWB Borderless Event at University of Iowa

Borderless is a series curated by the University of Iowa Department of Theatre Arts that is dedicated to producing an array of theatrical works representative of the diversity of experiences essential for students, faculty, administrators, and greater Iowa City community members to encounter onstage. As a predominantly-white institution (PWI), this initiative emerged in spring 2020 under the name “Diverse Voices” and has been renamed Borderless in the fall of 2020 to more clearly embrace its essential pillar: collaboration. We’re dedicated to working beyond the walls of the Theatre Building and permeating borders between university departments, across campus, and to the professional theatre world.

Borderless aims to a) provide a tailored, collaborative theatrical experience to an artist sharing a unique perspective, b) the opportunity for our students to work alongside an artist outside of the university, c) encourage collaboration with students and faculty of other departments and programs on campus, and d) introduce audiences that are regular Department of Theatre Arts production attendees as well as new theatregoers to view a compelling event told from a what will hopefully be a new perspective.

The inaugural event of the series was a staged reading and discussion of Reconciliation by Marisa Carr (Turtle Mountain Ojibwe) in the spring of 2020. Click here to see all past Borderless events.

Registration is required. Click here to register!

The University of Iowa Department of Theatre Arts and Theatre Without Borders invite you to join us for a conversation with the international team that created the Acting Together Project to document and strengthen the contributions of performance and ritual to social justice and conflict transformation. The Acting Together Project was developed through a unique collaboration between scholars affiliated with Brandeis University and the Theatre Without Borders network of global theatre practitioners. This event will celebrate both the 10th Anniversary of the Acting Together Project and the University of Iowa’s new Performing Arts & Social Justice Certificate Program.

The conversation will include: Cynthia Cohen (Director of the Peacebuilding & the Arts Program, Brandeis University); Polly O. Walker (editor of the Acting Together on the World Stage anthologies); Allison Lund (director of the Acting Together on the World Stage documentary); Shahid Nadeem (core-member of Theatre Without Borders, founder Ajoka Theatre, Lahore, Pakistan); Dijana Milosevic (core-member of Theatre Without Borders, director and co-founder, DAH Theater, Belgrade, Serbia); Loyce Arthur (University of Iowa Department of Theatre Arts faculty and a co-founder of the new Performing Arts & Social Justice Certificate Program).
Moderated by David J. Diamond (core-member of Theatre Without Borders, director of the La MaMa Umbria Symposium), with Jen Shook and Rob Ascher.

This event will take place on Zoom and is free and open to the public. Registration is required. Click here to register for Acting Together on the World Stage…

A MESSAGE FROM TRANS EUROPE HALLES

Trans Europe Halles (TEH) is a grass-roots network of 135 cultural organizations from 39 European countries.

TEH is in solidarity with Ukraine and would like to express our support to our members, partners, peers and friends in the country.

We are deeply troubled by the news from Ukraine and are concerned for the well-being and safety of the staff of our member centres there: IZOLYATSIA, ReZavod, Jam Factory Art Center and Dnipro Center for Contemporary Culture. We condemn Putin’s regime for bringing despair, tragedy and pain to a peaceful nation. At TEH we believe that Ukraine is an independent country with its own cultural heritage, language, mentality, history and territory. Nothing can justify Russian occupation and aggression against this nation.

It pains us to see our Ukrainian colleagues forced to flee with their families, abandon their work and homes, being scared for the well-being of their loved ones and having to leave their peaceful lives to join the army. This cannot be happening and we urge the wider European community, our colleagues, partners and peers to SPEAK UP, PROTEST and DEMAND their local MPs to take action!

We, as a community of grass-roots cultural and creative professionals, do not justify violence of any form and see human life as the greatest value. We cannot stand aside while our colleagues in Ukraine are being thrown out of their homes and have to fight for their lives. That is why we commit to come with an action plan to support our peers in need and help them go through this crisis.

What can you do now?

We are starting to look into possible resources and opportunities within our network. For the time being, we have made a list of suggestions that can be done now to support Ukraine.

DONATE

1. Donate money to humanitarian organisations/ initiatives

We prepared a list of initiatives and funds where you can donate money to support Ukrainian civilian society. If you know of any other relatable campaigns, please let us know at events@teh.net:

  1. https://www.gofundme.com/f/kyivindependent-launch – an independent media from Ukrain covering the events needs financial support to continue working
  2. https://redcross.org.ua/donateRed Cross Office in Ukraine / a world-known organisation that does a lot of humanitarian work, from helping refugees to training doctors.
  3. https://novaukraine.org – a non-profit organisation that provides citizens with everything they need in the time of crisis, from baby food and hygiene products to clothing and household items.
  4. https://vostok-sos.org/en/ – a non-governmental organisation that provides humantarian, psychological help and shelter for internally displaced persons (IDPs).
  5. https://voices.org.ua/en – a charity organisation that helps children to recover from psychological traumas of war.
  6. https://www.care.org – a global charity organisation that supports most vulnerable groups. They have launched a campaign for Ukraine.

2. TEH Solidarity Fund

TEH has launched now its own TEH Solidarity Fund. We will use this fund to collect money to help our members and their families in need. We will share what the money is being used to with the network on regular basis and make sure there is full transparency about it.

You can donate to our fund if you want to support our members-in-need and the effort we are doing to show solidarity with artist under threat.

News * Workshops/Training * Fellowships * Jobs
Welcome to my Resource/Newsletter! Here you will find a loosely constructed, irregularly disseminated, not comprehensive compendium of information I’ve come across that may be useful to theatre artists. Unattributed opinions expressed are not mine and I take no responsibility for missing or incomplete information. —David J Diamond

From Shahid Nadeem/ World Theatre Day: “We need to replenish our spiritual strength; we need to fight apathy, lethargy, pessimism, greed and disregard for the world we live in, the Planet we live on. Theatre has a role, a noble role, in energizing and mobilizing humanity to lift itself from its descent into the abyss. It can uplift the stage, the performance space, into something sacred.”
